The Ecological Alternative to Gentical Engineering

It was more or less good luck when the two scientists Guido Ebner and Heinz Schürch were starting to develop a heart pacemaker for Ciba-Geigy and discovered that electrostatic fields have an unusual effect on living tissue. Human blood was superposable for five month in a saline solution, notedly more than the usual 42 days. The number of red leukocytes did not decrease for this timespan. The heart of a rat generated for 120 minutes signals on the electrocardiogram though it was not conserved by a nutrient solution. The fact that cells of organs continued to live up to eight times longer under an electrostatic field outside of the body could likely be harnessed for organ transports for transplantations.

A series of pioneering, groundbreaking experiments in which Guido Ebner and Heinz Schürch studied the effects of electrostatic fields on microbes, plants and fish did follow.

They discovered that bacteria of the genus Halobacterium Halobium did start to produce the red dye Rhodopsin for photosynthesis in a nutrient solution when being exposed to an electrostatic field. The bacteria usually only do so under external pressure. When brought under an electrostatic field the bacteria developed a markedly resistance against salt. They continued to live for five years inside a salt crystal instead of the usual three to four month.

Even more stunningly the two scientists succeeded to awake a million year old fungus from salt drillings in the district of Aargau, Switzerland by exposing it to an electrostatic field. They gave the newly discovered fungus the name Scopulariopsis halophila. It was different to fungi living today mainly by its salt resistance but also by optical features.

Most stunning are the effects on plants and animals. Having become curious they exposed the spores of a usual fern during its germination phase to an electrostatic field. They were astonished that the usual fern did develop back to a hart's-tongue fern of unknown type as it was known from fossiles from stone coal. They presented their discovery in the TV-show ‘Supertreffer’ (‘super hit’) in the Swiss television.

The scientists succeeded to generate a beech fern, a type of South African leather fern and a hart's-tongue fern by different experiments out of the usual everyday fern. As it seems the fern which belongs to one of the oldest still living creatures did develop under an electrostatic field back to former development forms. The sequence of bases in the genome does not change. However other genes did become expressed. Interestingly the usual fern has 36 chromosomes while the hart's-tongue fern has 41.

As the hart's-tongue fern was freed up in the garden it did slowly develop back within about four generations into an everyday fern. You may see some photos of the fern in the book of Luc Bürgin (see for the references).

Really revolutionary are the results for winter wheat, maize and rainbow trout.

The winter wheat processed by an electrostatic field develops proteins that can not be found in any wheat kind as it is living today. The plants grow as fast that they can be harvested within four weeks instead of the usual seven month. That way wheat can be cultivated in totally new climate zones. There should be no pest infestation as the development cycle of the pests is aligned with the development cycle of wheat living today. The appearance of the wheat is dominated by paniculated ears as well as slender leaves. Interestingly the stem and the ears are a little bit smaller than with today`s wheat. Nonetheless there are more ears. The yield with wheat that has been processed with 4800 V/cm was up to three times higher. The processed wheat developed small tubers at the roots which points to the fact that the plants could stay alive for more than one year. However there were no matching results with Anza and Raineri wheat.

Processed maize develops three to twelve ears. The spadices are located at the upper boundary of the stem instead of the axila. Maize as it grows today does only have one or two spadices. The habit of the plants was more compact than with maize living today. Maize is a special kind of grass namely a gramineous plant. This kind of plants has always developed five to seven panicles as this can be seen with wild plants still living today in Peru. The germination and the growth rate are accelerated with the processed maize. The yield can be increased significantly.

The results with usual rainbow trouts were spectacular. The eggs were taken from female trouts and inseminated before they were exposed to an electrostatic field for four weeks. After another four weeks the young trouts were hatching. The wild trouts gained like this were up to one third bigger, heavier and more vigorous. The male trouts exposed a hook as salmons do. Remarkable are the distinctive patterning and the red color of the gills

The e-field trouts are far more wild than their domesticated relatives. They are very hard to catch and they jump far higher out of the water so that the fence at the boarder of the pond had to be made higher. When you pour food into the pond or when you put the hand into the pond the wild trouts run away seeking shelter instead of meeting at the hand that gives food. The wild trouts are far more resistant to germs and illnesses. Domesticated trouts were decimated by germs two times as often as their wild form.

As it seems genetic informations that have fallen dormant by breeding and degeneration can be revitalized by e-fields. Maize as it may have grown 500 years ago and ferns like millions of years ago. The impact of electrostatic fields on the evolution has not yet been explored. An electrostatic field is generated between earth and sky at thunderstorms which runs down on lightnings. In previous earth ages there were more thunderstorms. It is a fact that organisms can turn back to a previous state also by natural influences.

The results of this research were so unbelievable that certain Ciba scientists refused to enter the laboratory in order make their own opinion about the peculiar primeval forms of plants and animals. They preferred to debase the results as not assured. If a force as little as gravitation can influence the differentiation of living cells at the development of a new living why should an electrostatic field not have a significant influence?

As it seems the superiors of the two have succeeded to recognize the importance of the experiments. Two patent filings amount to the Ciba enterprise: A patent for the improved breeding of fish from the year 1989 and a more general patent for conditioning biological materials with electrostatic fields from the year 1997. As patent filings stay at least in Germay only valid for 20 years both patents should nowadays be applicable freely.

It had hit Guido Ebner and Heinz Schürch like a stroke when the company suspended all work and research concerning the experiments with electrostatic field in 1992. The company also withdrawed the filming permit of two journalists who wanted to report about the experiments. The top management had realized that they will be able to gain less money without selling pesticides. Todays patented, genetically engineered plants would as well not be of great interest with an invention like this. Instead todays companies develop so called terminator seeds that are resistant against pesticides and that can not sowed again after harvesting. When crossbreeding appears in spite of terminator seeds the farmers using conventional seeds are sued for patent right infringment.

It is alarming but today´s genetically engineered seeds can not remember primeval forms any more. Unfortunately Guido Ebner and Heinz Schürch have never published their results in a scientific journal. The only publicly available documents that they have left to us after their early death are the patent specifications.

In 1996 the mega-merger between Ciba and Sandoz took place creating a new company called Novartis. The agricultural division was outsourced later on under the name Syngenta. Heinz Schürch who stayed in the new company after Guido Ebner had left it because of a heart disease did not find a way to become happy there any more. The management ordered to only submit research approaches which promised to gain high profits. Nonetheless Guido Ebner tried to pursue the experiments on a private basis and developed a therapy against psoriasis with the halobacteria producing Rhodopsin.

The company Mannheimer Powerglas GmbH did also pursue commercial intents. They filed a patent for capacitors made of glass laminated with an electric conductor creating an electrostatic field. Up to that time the glass had only be used for the purpose of heating. The text of the patent filing was almost similar to that one of Guido Ebner. The Powerglas GmbH could achieve a yield increase of 25% with different grains in their outdoor tests. It remains mysterious why the company does not write a single word about the e-field experiments on their homepage in the meantime any more. Was the company blackmailed or corrupted by bribe money?

Ulrich Warnke, a bio-scientist from the university of the Saarland, Germany knows the Ciba-Geigy effect since the patent application in 1989. He has exposed fish and plants to electrostatic fields as Guido Ebner and Heinz Schürch did. However the physical-physiological variables are too diverse in order for the experiments to be arbitrarily reproducible. The scientists around Ulrich Warnke have investigated the quantum-physical basis of the effects. Nonetheless the results are not sufficiently resilient yet in order to be published.

Nonetheless there are a couple of other scientists who have engaged with or commented the e-field experiments which are not broadly known by the scientific community up to now.

Microbiologist and Nobel prize winner professor Werner Arber from the bio center of Basel who has developed the ‘gene scissors’ could see the experiments with his own eyes: ‘I was really impressed’. In his opinion the electrostatic interaction of molecules can be influenced by an electrostatic field: ‘As far as I have understood it many evidence indicates that electorstatic fields do not take an effect that would change genes. In a fact we can observe epigenetic phenomena like this.’.

The young German biologist Axel Schoen has written a 300 page long diploma thesis about the phenomena at the Johannes Gutenberg university in Meinz in 2001. After he had discovered that grass grows higher under high-voltage transmission lines his interest in the phenomenon started so that he came across the patent specification of Ciba. His professor Gunther Rothe assured to him his full support. Besides this professor Edgar Wagner from Freiburg, Germany did also engage into researching these phenomena.

Both sons of Guido Ebner, Daniel Ebner who has studied biology, chemistry and philosophy and Christoph or Nikunja Ebner who is an artist have tried to continue the expirements from their father and to make them public. Both have founded the »Guido Ebner Institute« together. Some process patents from their father Guido Ebner have been transferred into the association. Making the results available to developing countries is something that is close to their heart. In developing countries western seed firms like Monsanto are raging making farmers dependent until they have to sell their land.
